Hello Friends and Family, Here is my follow up letter that has been requested by many of you. The State 3A Basketball Tournament did not turn out like we had hoped it would. Hurricane High School Tigers going into the tournament was ranked 2nd in the State behind #1 Bear River High School. We were put in the toughest bracket which is all decided before the season even starts so that was a bummer right at the get go. We played Juan Diego High School for our first game. Our team came out flat; I believe a little shell shocked and the awe of the Big State Tournament. Hurricane has not made it to the state finals for 10 years, so it all was a new experience for the boys. Most of the Players shots were short and would just rim out. We had like 4 balls slip through our hands and fall out of bounds which hardly ever happen to our team. Nerves!! We lost that first game by 9 points. The team was just devastated with the way they played and the result. We all went up there expecting to finish 1st, 2nd or maybe 3rd.
With the loss, it put us in the consolation bracket which we played the next day against Emery High School. Our team played great this game. We thought, YEA! Our boys are back. We beat Emery by 9 points. Bear River played Emery the day before and only beat them by 6 points. (Bear River ended up taking the State Championship). The next day on Saturday we played Judge Memorial High for the consolation championship. We had one of those bad halves when the shots just would not go in. The ball would roll around the rim, hit the front of the rim, or rim out. If we could have thrown out the 1st quarter of this game, we would have won by 1 point, but of course you cannot do that. We lost to Judge by 15 points. So we ended up with 6th place in State. With our expectations we all had, it’s a bummer, but when you realize there are 26 teams in the state that are 3A, it’s not too bad after all. We ended up with a total record of 20 wins and 5 losses. I realize that this record is nothing to be mad about. That’s pretty dang good. In fact talking with people at the game and around town afterwards, they cannot think of another year that Hurricane High has ever had a record that good in basketball. Cory and Tyler played consistent throughout the tournament and both did a great job in scoring points, rebounding, and passing. We are so proud of them for all the great work they put into this season. They are awesome players and are fun to watch. It’s especially fun when they are in there together banging the boards and wheeling and dealing on other teams. They play great together! We wanted to thank all those who supported the boys in basketball this year. We had family and friends drive from Hurricane and Beaver to go to the State games, and a lot of family that lived up in the Salt Lake area that were able to come to the games. That’s awesome support and we love you for this. We know life is busy and crazy so we know it was a sacrifice. Thanks again! Now another chapter has closed in our life and we open a new one. Monday high school baseball started where Tyler and Cory are both pitching and playing first base among other positions. Shayden, Reagan and Kandalyn are also all playing baseball. Nancy and I should have a very nice tan, or skin cancer, when the season is over this year. Cory has also started his Missionary computer process this week with our Bishop as he will be turning 19 at the end of July. He was also accepted to BYU for schooling, but he will defer his acceptance until after his mission. We will keep you posted! We love you all. And as always, thanks for your love and support. Brian
